PROGRAM NOTES

STRING QUARTET IN F MAJOR, OPUS 77 #2 by Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)

The two quartets of Opus 77, written in 1799, were the last quartets that Haydn wrote. They were composed for Prince Franz Joseph Lobkowitz, who was both an excellent violinist and an experienced amateur chamber music player. (It is to the same man that Beethoven dedicated his first string quartets, the six quartets of Opus 18). It is not known why there are only two quartets in this set instead of Haydn’s usual pattern of three or six but it may have been due to Haydn’s health at the time, which was not good and also because he was enormously preoccupied with the oratorio, The Seasons. The F Major Quartet has the drive and energy of a young Haydn and represents his quartet writing at its most engaging.

The F Major Quartet, Opus 77 #2 was first played at Music Mountain on Sunday, July 17, 1938.
