I bought a single white lily last night. I don't know what flower is "appropriate," or "official." I just like lilies, either because of the beautiful photos I've seen of them, or the way they make real life seem black and white, their simplicity, or that my grandmother had a huge garden of them. I remember I requested only white lilies for my mother's funeral.
I went to 'Ground Zero' today--The World Trade Center. Lower Manhattan. I wanted to leave the lily; to show my respect. Plus I wanted to make sure--to see for myself--that it really did happen. That the fantastic movie-like images I'd seen before leaving for London were true.
The lily in my hand felt like a passport, a reason to visit. I took the subway downtown to Church St. The only other person in the car was a large black woman who seemed confused when the next stop was not what was indicated on the map. Many of t...
