PROGRAM NOTES
STRING QUARTET IN A MAJOR, K. 464 (1785) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
The Mozart A Major String Quartet, K. 464, is the fifth of the set of six which Mozart dedicated to Haydn. The A Major Quartet was completed in a burst of creativity on January 10, 1785, two months after the B Flat Major Quartet, K. 458, “Hunt” and four days before the C Major Quartet, K. 465 “Dissonance”.
It was first performed in Mozart’s apartment on February 12, 1785 with the other of the final three quartets Mozart dedicated to Haydn. It was played by a quartet comprising Mozart, his father, Leopold and the Barons Anton and Bartholomaus Tinti. Haydn was present at this performance, as he was at the first performance of the first three of the six quartets dedicated to him.
