Mistakes_small In this hour of The Blues & Beyond, we'll spend time with the recordings of the Broke & Hungry label, a record company devoted to modern rural Mississippi blues. This new retrospective compilation from the label is called "Mistakes Were Made: Five Years of Raw Blues, Damaged Livers, and Questionable Business Decisions." It's a double disc full of great blues, including a number of previously unissued tracks as well as songs culled from the catalog of Broke & Hungry Records, including the music of the late Wesley "Junebug" Jefferson, Terry "Harmonica" Bean, the elusive Odell Harris, and others. Also on this show blues from the late Lacy Gibson, who was mistaken for Buddy Guy by Chess Records at one time, and new jazz from piano sensation Eldar Djangirov, a former boy wonder who is now a ripe old twenty-four years old. His fifth album "Three Stories" is a solo work, and from it we'll hear a Thelonious Monk piece that is a tribute to Bud Powell. We will also hear from Powell himself, and another Monk piece from Eric Reed, reinterpreting the music of Monk on his new album "The Dancing Monk." Plus a song from the debut album of Swiss-born jazz vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Eliane Amherd.
