Four Nights Drunk, give or take a few - an old English ballad crosses over into The Blues again with Bobby Rush. Read the full description.

Rush_small In this hour of The Blues & Beyond, we'll feature the new Bobby Rush album "Show You A Good Time," and take one song on it and trace its roots as an old English ballad, checking out versions by blues and old-time performers from 1929 right up to that latest version by Bobby Rush. The song is an old English folk song, a Child Ballad (a ballad collected by folklorist Francis James Child and included in his anthology of traditional ballads in the 19th century).  Variously entitled "The Goodman," "Four Nights Drunk," Three Nights Drunk," "Seven Drunken Nights," and other numbers in between, it's the timeless story of a guy coming home, drunk yet again, seeing something amiss, and receiving a far-fetched explanation from his wife, who probably deserves some understanding for whatever she is doing at this point... we'll hear the story from Ruth Brown, Coley Jones, Gid Tanner (1934 with Riley Puckett), and others, and then play a few more new songs from the Bobby Rush album. Also, new music from singer Laura Ainsworth from her fine debut album "Keep It To Yourself," bassist Ben Williams and his band from their popular album "State Of Art," dynamic Mississippi bluesman Vasti Jackson, and Spanish blues and boogie woogie pianist Lluis Coloma, who has often taken boogie woogie to new levels but on his latest album "Rockin' My Blues In Chicago" almost channels the piano greats he covers, including Little Brother Montgomery.
