A while back, producer Richard Paul was walking through a huge, city-wide art exhibit. It had pretty-much what you'd expect as far as range of subjects that all the various artists decided to depict. There were tress and there was fruit and there were landscapes ... And lots and LOTS of naked people. He decided to take this phenomenon and -- you should pardon the expression -- look below the surface of what it's about. This piece originally aired on "Studio 360."

Review of Naked PeopleNudes can be found in all forms of visual artist work. Trust me. The piece looks at the history (sort of) of nudes and why artists create them. What is it that we see in nudes? Depends on who you ask. Some people are asked that here. Mixture of humor and information makes this piece...well...a pealing. |

Review of Naked PeopleIs nudity always artistic? Not the first time this question has been asked, but it's the first time I heard a radio story about it that tries to analyze it a bit. And it isn't tacky at all. I could hear this any time of the day, weekday or weekend. |

This place had TONS of naked people and after about the 15th nude, my mind naturally turned to -- no, not that -- get your head out of the gutter. I started thinking about all the different ways artists were USING naked bodies in their work.
Sometimes it's easy to figure out. Here's a virgin stroking a unicorn. THIS artist painted THIS picture -- so he could sleep with the model. But not every use of a nude is bluntly obvious. I mean, what about this painting. By Steven Lewis.
Steven Lewis: "A half torso of a man in the ocean and he's painting the bottom half of three women's torsos that are crowned by, like a ring of flowers. They're really just kind of genitals that are standing there. There's a heart that's been ripped out of his chest. And there's Mickey Mouse with his shorts off, naked kind of laughing and pointing as the beer cans kind of wash up on he shoreline."...

Review of Naked People
Richard Paul's piece is amusing and thought-provoking. It would work well on an afternoon Weekend Edition news magazine. Morning might be a little too early - we're all still staring bleary eyed at ourselves in the bathroom mirror. Great bits of music add oomph to the piece. I might add that while listening to Naked People, I was reminded of former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft's clothing of Lady Justice's bare breast during his tenure in Washington, D.C. He didn't want her breast peeking over his shoulder while he was giving press conferences.
