Throughout history, unstable states have relied on quasi-official militias, paramilitaries, and warlords to carry out their goals.  University of Oklahoma International Studies and Political Science Professor Ariel Ahram's new book Proxy Warriors explores why these developing nations co-opt these groups and turn former rebels into state-sponsored mercenaries.

The use and acceptance of controversial interrogation and punishment has evolved drastically throughout the world since September 2001.  University of Kansas political scientist Brent Steele speaks with the panel about whether or not attitudes and official U.S. policy have changed in the nearly three years since the inauguration of President Barack Obama.
