NEA JAZZ MASTER BRANFORD MARSALIS IS THE FIRST-BORN OF THE DISTINGUISHED MARSALIS FAMILY OF NEW ORLEANS. HE’S EQUALLY AT HOME PLAYING JAZZ, BLUES, FUNK, AND CLASSICAL SAXOPHONE. HIS TRAINING BEGAN WITH BROTHER WYNTON AT THE NEW ORLEANS CENTER FOR CREATIVE ARTS WHERE THEIR FATHER, ELLIS MARSALIS, TAUGHT JAZZ. BUT ELLIS HANDED HIS SONS OVER TO THE CLASSICAL WING OF NOCCA -- WHICH HAS SERVED THEM WELL – WITH BOTH WYNTON AND BRANFORD ENGAGED IN CLASSICAL PROJECTS TO THIS DAY.
Branford Marsalis: He was so fearful of, of accusations of nepotism — which invariably showed up anyway — but he was so afraid of it that he just didn’t really want the perception of impropriety anywhere near…us. So he stuck us in Dr. Breaux’s class. It was not “stuck in,” I learned a lot.
