Host Introduction: Each spring and fall, millions of migratory birds course their way across the United States to and from their summer breeding grounds. But increasingly, more and more birds do not complete the long journey.
In a basement freezer at Chicago's Field Museum is a bag of several hundred dead songbirds that will eventually be used for scientific research. The birds were picked up outside Baudette (buh-DETT), Minnesota, a town of about a thousand northwest of International Falls, on the Canadian border.
As part of their Song-Stories series, producers Elizabeth Meister and Dan Collison of Long Haul Productions journeyed to Baudette to find out just how the songbirds ended up in at the Field Museum's freezer. They collaborated with the musical group Mountain Man, which contributed an original song in this story of human … and AVIAN … migration.
