Hello, I’m Candice Agree. Welcome to The Spanish Hour, a weekly program of classical music from Spain and the Spanish-speaking world.
This week, a real treat for guitar lovers: Fiesta de la Guitarra, a live concert recording, made February 11th in Greenfield Hall at the Manahattan School of Music. The concert is part of Visiones: The Music of Spain and Latin America, a series presented from September 2010 through May 2011 that included students and faculty of the reknowned conservatory, as well as guest artists.
All the works on today’s program are by composers from Latin America. And the first guitar piece on the program is by Joaquín Nin. Born in Cuba 1879, Joaquín spent most of his first 21 years in Barcelona, with his father, returning to Cuba in 1901. A year later he married Rosa Culmell and moved to Paris. At the onset of World War Two, he returned to Havana where he died in 1949...
