From “Death Comes for the Archbishop,” Michael Belitsos reads a story about a priest who loved his food more than his flock. At the end Julia Child introduces Judy Rodgers, of the Zuni Café in San Francisco, who recreates the recipe for the main course in the story -- a stew that incites calamity. From "Cannery Row," Steinbeck's characters poach a chicken over a campfire, in a 5-gallon coffee can. Julia steps in to explain how the boys’ recipe is just like Poule au Pot, the favorite dish of King Henri IV in 15th century France. She introduces Chef Carlo Middione, who gives practical kitchen advice -- and takes us to Chinatown for Chinese variations on the theme.

MICHAEL BELITSOS: In Carmel Valley the artichoke plants stood gray green, and the willows were lush along the river. They turned left up the valley. Luck blossomed from the first. A dusty Rhode Island red rooster who had wandered too far from his own farmyard crossed the road and Eddie hit him without running too far off the road.
