Hello, I’m Candice Agree. Welcome to The Spanish Hour, a weekly program of classical music from Spain and the Spanish-speaking world.

This week’s show is dedicated to the music of one of South America’s most important composers of the twentieth century, Alberto Ginastera. Ginastera was born in the port city of Buenos Aires in 1916, the son of Italian and Catalan immigrants. He began writing music as a youngster, and by the age of 18 he was a young composer to watch. Ginastera has written in every music genre from opera, ballet scores, orchestral and chamber works, to music theater and film. He composed concertos for harp, piano, cello and violin, as well as works for choir, piano, voice, organ, flute, guitar, and chamber music.
