TRINITY ORDONA: My mother’s a dressmaker, so she makes the dresses for all the girls. So it’s very special for each girl to get what they want. And I was the only girl who wanted a Filipino dress. And there’s different styles to it, but one of the particular ones has to do with the sleeves that are puffed up and are made of piña , which is pounded pineapple. And then so we’re actually in San Diego putting the material on and draping it, and Des brought a picture of her and her holoku.

DESIREE THOMPSON: And I was going to have it made in Hawaii. So an holoku is a long formal dress, a high collar and high bodice and long sleeves. And since her mom is an expert seamstress, dressmaker, she volunteered and said, “I can make that!” So that was taken care of.

ORDONA: We said, “Mom, can you take Desiree’s measurements ‘cause we’re going to send them back to Hawaii to have this made.” And we sh...
