Classical Quixote is the title of the next edition of The Spanish Hour. Purcell, Minkus, Korngold, Ibert, Ravel, Massenet, Obradors, Guridi, Esplá and more have been inspired by Don Quixote, Miguel de Cervantes’ novel of the "the man with the sorrowful contenance." Hello, I’m Candice Agree. Welcome to The Spanish Hour, a weekly program of classical music from Spain and the Spanish-speaking world.
Composers from Purcell to Minkus, Korngold to Ibert, Ravel to Massenet and more have been inspired by Don Quixote, Miguel de Cervantes’ novel of the well-meaning but misguided knight errant. Spanish composers have been inspired too, Obradors, Guridi, and Esplà among them. This edition of The Spanish Hour, titled Classical Quixote, explores how some other Spanish composers – Gerhard, Falla, and Gombau, transformed Cervantes words into music.
Roberto Gerhard was born in 1896 in the Catalan comarca, or district, of Valls. Rather than depicting particular scenes from the novel, these dances from Gerhard’s ballet Don Quijote are reflections on themes that run throughout the book.
