Hello, I’m Candice Agree. Welcome to The Spanish Hour, a weekly program of classical music from Spain and the Spanish-speaking world. This week’s program focuses on composers and siblings Rodolfo and Ernesto Halffter. They were members of a Spanish vanguard of artists that included Picasso, Garcia Lorca, Buñuel, Dalí and Mompou.

Ernesto, born in 1905, was the third of six children, and was one of a number of Halffter musicians. His brother Rodolfo, five years Ernesto’s senior, was also a composer, as is nephew, Cristóbal and Cristobal’s son Pedro, whose works we’ll feature in an upcoming edition of The Spanish Hour. Ernesto was only 6 years old when he and Rodolfo, then 11, started writing operas together. Ernesto was 17 and his brother 22 when their compositions came to the attention of the influential critic Adolfo Salazar. Jean Cocteau described Ernesto’s music as combining "spirited...
