In my darkest, loneliest moments, I long for my mother. I know my mother from the inside out - the scent of her salty sweat, the texture of her sun-browned arms, the cadence of her voice, the restless explorations of her mind. I also know my children from the inside out. They began as a wave of kicks and bumps in the ocean of my belly. First we shared a heart beat, then a bed. Now we share a home, and soon we will share a community and the world. For now, we accumulate the daily experiences that accumulate, like sedimentary rock, into the solid relationship we call "mother."
