Mount Pleasant Cemetery has two of the last true gravediggers in the state of Maine. Read the full description.

Gravediggers_prx_small

At Mount Pleasant Cemetery in South Portland, they’ve been digging graves by hand ever since 1873. No machines, just shovels and elbow grease. While most cemeteries have modernized and bought backhoes, Mount Pleasant has two of the last true gravediggers in the state of Maine. Eugene Rand and Bill True take a lot of pride in being two of the last gravediggers who dig exclusively by hand. Each grave can take up to two days to dig. It’s a rocky cemetery. Luckily, Bill and Eugene are best friends and enjoy spending those long hours down in the hole together.
