SUGAR PIE DE SANTO is a singer, dancer, band leader and song writer who is responsible for the hit with Etta James "In The Basement". She has recorded many hits on Chess Records as well as other labels plus has written songs for other artists. She talks about her career which spans across the last six decades. Sugar Pie DeSanto was born Umpeylia Marsema Balinton to an African American mother and Filipino father. She grew up in San Francisco into a musical household. She and her sibling’s began singing in a neighborhood group which eventually became know as “The Peaches".

This program (A Taste of Sugar: The Sugar Pie de Santo Story (Part #2)) is one hour in length and is one third of a three part series. Any of the three programs can be played without the other two. This program is divided into three sets. The first set is the short one which leaves room for the news. Sets one and three are standalone leaving room for announcements.

Highlights of the interview

Segment One: Sugar Pie de Santo discusses her back flips on stage; the hit “In The Basement” with Etta James, and the Chess Records musicians that played on her records.

Segment Two: Sugar Pie de Santo  talks about her days with the James Brown Review (1959 - 1960), she would come on after the James Brown dancers and before James Brown himself, she earned the nickname the Lady James Brown, a discussion on the song "Go Go Power" which was rediscovered in England recently, bassist Willie Dixon is also mentioned.
