Hello, I’m Candice Agree. Welcome to The Spanish Hour, a weekly program of classical music from Spain and the Spanish-speaking world.
This week, we’ll hear some lesser-known works by well-known composers. One of the most famous, if not the most famous Spanish composer outside of Spain is Joaquín Rodrigo. His two works for guitar and orchestra – Concierto de Aranjuéz and Fantasía para un gentilhombre – are heard regularly in the concert hall and on the radio. But they represent only a small fraction of Rodrigo’s oeuvre, which includes orchestral, chamber, solo, stage works and sound tracks, even a piece commissioned by NASA: over 180 works in all. Rodrigo wrote Tres Evocaciones in 1981, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Joaquín Turina.
