Sugar Pie de Santo is a singer, dancer, band leader and song writer who is responsible for the hit with Etta James "In The Basement". She has recorded many hits on Chess Records as well as other labels plus has written songs for other artists. She talks about her career which spans across the last six decades. Sugar Pie DeSanto was born Umpeylia Marsema Balinton to an African American mother and Filipino father. She grew up in San Francisco into a musical household. She and her sibling’s began singing in a neighborhood group which eventually became know as “The Peaches".

This program (A Taste of Sugar: The Sugar Pie de Santo Story (Part #1)) is one hour in length and is one third of a three part series. Any of the three programs can be played without the other two. This program is divided into three sets. The first set is the short one which leaves room for the news. Sets two and three are standalone leaving room for announcements.

Segment Two: Sugar Pie de Santo talks with Howard Burchette about her family like in San Francisco. He corrects the rumor on the internet that she was born in Brooklyn. She talks about her classically trained pianist mother Alice Balinton. Her sister Francesca Balinton was a member of the group “The Peaches” and Etta James was the lead singer of the group.

Segment Three: Sugar Pie de Santo talks about winning all of the early talent shows in San Francisco, how she met Johnny Otis who offered to record her, how she got her stage name Sugar Pie de Santo and mentions Tina Turner.
