Settling in to Kansas City

From: KCUR
Length: 02:45

Vietnamese American family in Kansas City welcomes relatives from New Orleans, and connects to larger community. Read the full description.

Default-piece-image-1 Before Hurricane Katrina hit, more than 30,000 Vietnamese and Vietnamese Americans lived along the coasts of Louisiana and Mississipi. Houston is home to more than 60,000. In fact a strip mall – called the Hong Kong Mall – became housing for thousands of Asian evacuees from Louisiana. Here in Kansas City, Vietnamese churches, student groups and community organizations have been collecting funds for all the victims of the hurricanes. But they have kept an eye out for new arrivals that might appreciate a Vietnamese welcome. Last weekend, KCUR's Sylvia Maria Gross talked to one Kansas City family who was happy to be reunited with their relatives from New Orleans.
