One of my patients described her life-long struggle with anxiety. When I asked her what allowed the anxiety to shift, she described her time in a charismatic church. Her family, amazed by her transformation, fear she was being brainwashed. Another newcomer in the church, a savvy elderly woman, comforted her. "I'm so old, Honey," she said, "I figure my brain could use some washing." As I examine my own life, I realize fear and pain are powerful catalysts for change. Although potent, they are not sustainable. Only inspiration, the headlong rush toward what I love, is a sustainable fuel.
