This is Petje Schröder.
She’s a 52-year-old Dutchwoman, but she lives in the provincial Polish city of Lodz, (although you probably know it as Lodz).
But for the last decade, she has made a career of looking at hundreds of thousands of words in Polish, Russian and German.
Petje studies birth certificates, death certificates and marriage certificates.
She gleans databases, the Internet, and dusty archives in the basements of creaky public buildings.
In short, she’s nothing more than a detective, although officially the title is genealogist.
And her clients are Jews from all over the world trying to tie together the threads of their Polish history and rediscover family past and present.
It’s a job Petje’s good at.
