From: WAMU
Length: 00:04:47

Andre, a graduate of WAMU's Youth Voices, agonized over his college choice and finally picked one...in New Orleans. Read the full description.

Default-piece-image-1 You may remember Andre Rosario from the story he did for Youth Voices a few months ago. Andre had a tough choice to make between colleges: ivy league Cornell or historically black Xavier University in New Orleans. Despite a lot of pressure to go ivy, in the end he chose Xavier. Well, Andre’s back. He’d only been at college for two weeks when his family called and told him he had to get out of the city…immediately. This story includes a first person narrative from Andre, as well as two other students who'd been attending college in New Orleans and are now at Howard University in DC. Andre's original story is also available on PRX. It's called "College-Bound"

Review of Starting College...Again

Andre seems like a normal guy, not one who just lost their home. The piece has a good story on how the taxi driver got him to the airport in time and in turn, saved his life. I liked how Andre interviewed other evecuees on their thoughts and feelings. Jonathan seemed to have everything go wrong with his bus catching on fire. I can also relate to his doubt in coping with a school of a large size. I, myself, went from a graduating class of 40 to a class of 857 when entering high school. I liked how Christopher puts the hurricane in perspective when he said, "It's just mother nature...you can't stop her," because you can't and that makes the audience feel helpless. Finally, when Andre described New Orleans after the hurricane as a "ghost town", a somber tone appears; maybe he has thoughts about not returning, after all, he's "Unsure".
