Despite the rising temperatures, a thick coat of ice remains on many northern lakes and ponds.
For ice divers, now is a great time of year to get under the surface.
Independent Producer Todd Bookman went to Sand Pond on the Marlow/Lempster border in New Hampshire to learn more.
Before we try to figure out the 'why' of scuba diving under ice, let's first tackle the 'how?'
There are 3 things you've got to do just to get at the water:
[SOUND: shoveling]
Shovel off the snow.
[SOUND: drilling noise]
Then using an ice auger, bore some holes through the 17"-thick surface.
[SOUND: sawing]
Last, grab an antique ice saw and start connecting the holes.
MG: It's not everyday you get a bunch of people here to cut the hole for you…so you take advantage of it when you can, cause this is like the hardest part of the whole dive. (laughing)
