When I first walked into the nursing home, only the slowly moving mouths of the elders eating their lunch betrayed their status among the living. At first I was overwhelmed with their pain, and their close proximity with death. Over time I came to know them as people, and to celebrate the richness of experience they had accumulated, even as their physical bodies thinned and finally abandoned them. I counted them as shooting stars, passing through the veil. They were gone, but not forgotten.
