Blues & Beyond #244: Peter MacDonough takes us to the Wizard, Dave Holland makes flamenco his own, Randy Weston continues a lifelong quest
Series: Blues & Beyond
From: WXPN
Length: 00:59:00
In this hour of The Blues & Beyond, we'll head off to see the wizard. Peter MacDonough's "The Woo: A Latin Jazz Suite for Soprano Saxophone" is a new way of playing the classic songs from The Wizard Of Oz. After we get back from Oz, we'll listen to Phil Hawkins who plays the steel pan, often called a steel drum, an instrument that has origins in Trinidad, where it was invented by adapting 55-gallon oil drums. We'll hear from guitarist Nels Cline, who wrote a soundtrack for a non-movie -- a collection of paintings by Ed Ruscha. Plus, bassist Dave Holland plays flamenco with guitarist Pepe Habichuela, on the album "Hands" that took several years of work in order for Holland to really get inside flamenco and make it his own. Also: Randy Weston continues more than half a century of exploring the relationship between African music and American jazz on his latest album "The Storyteller." We'll hear a couple of tracks from it.
