Welcome to the Broadway Matinee, songs from the stage and screen. I'm Janean Jorgensen. Occasionally a form asks for my race or ethnicity. Usually I have to check the box next to the word "White" - which is true - my skin is so pale I glow in the dark. But I would actually prefer that, next to the list of First Nations, Latin-American, and African-American, the box say "European-American." My ancestors came from Denmark, Germany, Britain and French-Canada. Since those cultures were adapted as the mainstream culture for the colonies and latter United States, I've grown up seeing people who look like me in power and influence - politics, entertainment, and my community. That's been slowly changing, but the conversation between cultures still has stupid stereotypes that keep popping up.
