Long before Beatlemania whipped fans of the Fab Four into a near-religious ecstasy, keyboard virtuoso Franz Liszt swept through a European concert tour complete with sold-out shows, adoring fans, and no shortage of female admirers. Yet despite Liszt's fame and scandalous love affairs, he was a man of humble faith who ultimately joined a Franciscan order. So just who was the real Franz Liszt?
The answer lies in his letters and music, which we'll hear in Odyssey of Love. Pianist Lucy Parham has compiled Liszt's correspondence with two of his long-time lovers and others, and presents them as interludes to some of his greatest piano music.
Odyssey of Love stars Martin Jarvis, Rosalind Ayres, and at the piano, Lucy Parham.
Hour Two includes a feature on Liszt's legendary concerts and the rise of "Lisztomania" with Robert Winter, Presidential Chair in Music and Interactive Arts at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.
