On Monday October 9, 2010, John Lennon would have turned 70 years old. "John Ono Lennon" is an hour public-radio memorial and celebration, much of it told in Lennon's own words and musics, from interviews, albums, outtakes, antics and poetics. The hour features:
"All We Are Saying" by Barrett Golding- Lennon sings, talks, and testifies about peace, family, and art.
"The Day John Lennon Died" by Paul Ingles- Members of the generation jolted by Lennon's death recall how they heard the news and how deeply this ex-Beatle's life affected theirs (where were you when you heard?)
"NYC/LA Radio" & "20th Anniversary Mourners" found-sound from The Professor (WFMU Audio Kitchen)- scanning the radio dial the night of Lennon's death, and mourners 20 years later singing in Central Park.
"On Ed Sullivan" by Lynn Neary- an audio recollection by our host of Beatles live performances and 1963-64 fanclub Christmas messages.

Review of JOHN ONO LENNON SpecialWill some one Canonize Paul Ingles so the rest of us can genuflect with purpose? This time master producer Paul leads an all star cast down the path that we all share: Lennon's life. Engaging, perfectly produced, Packaged for plug and play use by stations. And to top it all off!--Lynn Neary. Did we all die and go to heaven? No, just John Damn It. This story makes you remember every moment of your life and even inspires you to think about how your future will turn knowing that one of the greatest artists in history lived among us. --Heck it's more inspiring about our future than those last ten minuets of Six Feet Under. We're presented with amazing stories, interviews we've heard before and some pieces that are not heard before. We get it all. Prepare for chills when you get to Lennon's murder. Howard Cosell on NFL football announcing the murder--HOW DO YOU GET THIS STUFF! Special kudos for breaking up the package into promo, show and break segments. Every PD in the system owes you a beer. My PD is getting a nudge on this one! |

Review of JOHN ONO LENNON Special
This December 8th will be the 25th anniversary of the tragic death of John Lennon. Having been a committed Beatleologist for 30 years, I thought somewhat sarcasticly
"Oh, swell. Yet another narrated rehash of Beatle stuff for reconsumption," when I saw the listing for the John Ono Lennon Special, produced by Hearing Voices. There was certainly much of that. Lynn Neary's (NPR) introduction including her early exposure to the Beatles had me braced for "John goes to All Things Considered". There was much of that as well. I thought I'd seen, heard, or read every biographical account ever produced. After all, how much more is there to uncover that hasn't already been done again and again? The pleasant surprise was when the narration stopped and the next 25 minutes of the program became a montage of John's interviews, music (solo and with the 3 others), and various recordings from his entire career. This was enough to keep me intrigued, waiting for some inimate detail I've never heard before. The program is itself a montage of short productions pieced together into a one hour program. Some highlights include early takes of many of his greatest songs, "Anthology" style, and studio banter, which takes the listener right there. In the second half, Neary returns while people share their feelings about John's impact on their lives as well as when he they heard he had been shot to death. Though it's unlcear who these people are or why they were particularly chosen. Though very professionally edited, the content is not particularly rivetting or original and feels as if it was made simply beause someone thought SOMETHING had to be made at this time.
