My brother called, letting me know my father was close to passing. I boarded the plane the next day and had 12 precious hours with my dad before he passed. The next morning, exhausted from lack of sleep and grief, I awoke in my childhood bedroom and watched a host of birds in the crabapple trees outside. The birds were singing and feasting on the frozen apples from the previous autumn. My prayer, like the birds: gather the nourishment from those who are passing, and make a feast of the living.
