Years ago I waited at the airport for my mother's arrival with her friend Pat. "Your mom is really special," said Pat, "but I'm sure you know that already." I realized this friend had come to know my mother when she was in full bloom, in the years after the kids had grown and she was able to pursue interests of her own. I came to know my mother through her friend's eyes, and realized my view of Mom had not evolved along with her. Celebrating my friend Louise's 70th birthday, I recognized how I had come to know her when she was in full bloom. My special kinship with Louise deepened when she nursed me and my injured shoulder. In meditation, I had a flash of taking care of her - years in the future, I assumed. 15 months later Louise was diagnosed with lung cancer. True to her nature, Louise stepped up to the challenge and transformed her life. I watched compassion blossom in her - for herself and for the world. She continues to water the world with compassion, and live in full bloom.
