Alone in a Desert of Strangers: Thoughts on the Tucson Shooting
From: Aengus Anderson
Length: 00:09:03
The January 8, 2011 shooting in Tucson, Arizona has ignited a fiery discussion about the shooter's cultural context. Some have claimed that Jared Loughner was inspired by a vitriolic political atmosphere, while others contend that his violence resulted from mental illness and had no relation to his cultural surroundings. In this audio essay, Tucsonan Aengus Anderson suggests another interpretation of the tragedy: that Loughner's act reveals the alarmingly weak state of community in America.
