ERIC WHITNEY: Last weekend more than two thousand people ran from Manitou Springs to the fourteen thousand one hundred and fifteen foot summit of Pikes Peak, and then many of them turned around and ran back down. It was the annual Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon. Western Skies contributor Anita Miller talked to some of the participants about what motivates them for this lung-busting challenge.
ANITA MILLER: At the carbo-feed dinner the night before the Ascent, children of racers sing “happy birthday” to the race itself. It’s a tune Ascent participant and race volunteer, Susan Guyn has heard a lot recently. Guyn turned fifty this month and decided to celebrate the milestone by racing up Pikes Peak.
