From classic ensembles like Cannon's Jug Stompers and the Memphis Jug Band to great slide guitar masters like Furry Lewis and Bukka White to the rich Country Blues of Frank Stokes and Sleepy John Estes, join us for an in-depth look at the Memphis Blues scene of the 1920s and 1930s. Read the full description.

1928-7_frankstokes_small The music scene in Memphis of the 1920s and 1930s was not only blessed with some of the most talented Blues performers of the era, it also fortunately saw the major record companies flocking there to record as well. And although the Jug Band craze apparently got it's start earlier in the 1920s in Louisville, Kenucky, it reached its musical and artistic zenith in Memphis, with such legendary groups as Will Shade's Memphis Jug Band, Will Batts and Jack Kelly with the South Memphis Jug Band, Cannon's Jug Stompers, and Jed Davenport's Beale Street Jug Band. In the meantime, Country Blues performers such as guitarists Frank Stokes and Dan Sane, Furry Lewis, Sleepy John Estes, Robert Wilkins (the "Reverend" part would come later), Bukka White, and Memphis Minnie, among others, also recorded there, leaving a rich musical legacy indelibly stamped on this most musical of American cities. Join us for an illuminating look into some of the great Blues Legends of the 1920s and 1930s in Memphis, along with some top-notch, first-rate Country Blues for which the city was justifiably famous.
