We give them rice
They do not eat
The rice they trample
With their feet.
This is a riddle about the tradition of throwing rice at a bride and groom. Our friends Ted and Nattaya got married last Saturday. When I told them the riddle, Nattaya -- who is from Thailand -- looked rather bewildered. It turns out that although she owns a rice field back in Chang Rai, newlyweds in Thailand aren't showered with rice and good wishes as they depart. Instead, each guest ties a colorful string bracelet on the bride and groom's wrists and speaks a blessing. Our friends had the most vibrantly festooned forearms by the end of their wedding day.
NEW RIDDLE:
Once a light house
Shone on sand
Guided monarchs
Distant land.
(answer: see 12/25/10 piece)
