The van that's keeping babies healthy one mother at a time. Read the full description.

Healthybabies_small It's one of those statistics that really makes you mad. Washington, DC, the capital of the richest country in the world -- has an infant mortality rate that's up there with some of the most destitute third world countries. While actually HAVING a baby is an individuals choice -- that doesn't mean the community can't lend a hand in seeing that that baby comes into the world healthy. But when you consider that there are hundreds and hundreds of mostly poor pregnant mothers in the District who are "at risk" -- at risk to have a crack baby -- at risk for fetal alcohol syndrome -- at risk for low birth weight -- you realize what a daunting task it is to try and keep at least SOME of them healthy. That's why it is so amazing to learn about The Health Babies Project. This tiny organization works to keep pregnant women healthy in two large chunks of Northeast and Southeast D-C. Their premise is simple -- every mother -- regardless of income or social status -- EVERY mother deserves a healthy baby. How do they do it? Believe it or not -- as producer Richard Paul discovered -- they do it one mother at a time...

Review of Healthy Babies

This report does a great job of capturing a day on the job--of illustrating the hardships and rewards of working on the Healthy Babies Project. The sound is great too and there are some colorful, memorable actualities. This would be best to boradcast on a news magazine, All Things Considered or Morning Edition. It would be a good addition to any show on community, healthcare, inner city culture. cm
