101204 Radiation's (or Was That Radio Station's) Anniversary
From: Jamie Dell'Apa
Series: New Orleans Saturday Night on WWOZ
Length: 01:13:09
I thought it odd when WWOZ's management asked me to do a show about radiation's anniversary but I jumped to it. Actually, I jumped too quick. Probably an involuntary reaction to the time I got stuck cleaning out the station's storage shed of post-Katrina salvaged debris. Ever since, I immediately comply with any management request that doesn't involve mold, rats and rot.
I was well into the research on radiation when I found that Enrico Fermi got the first atomic reactor to turn over and start on a cold December 2nd, 1942. (He had to pump the accelerator to get 'er started.) Unquestioningly figuring that's the anniversary that WWOZ wanted celebrated, I had the whole show planned out into great detail. Atom bomb songs, here we come!
Well as Peggy Lou hands off the station to me at midnight, she asked me if I'm going to play music to celebrate the radio station's anniversary. WWOZ is 30 years old. Did I hear her say radio station or radiation Ah crap. She said radio station not radiation. What a screw up I've made. it's too late to throw out the work and start over so here goes, songs about radiation.
Oh, yeah. My recorder melted down in the 70th minute so this show ends as it started - with a mistake.
