Years ago my friend Judith Pintar was studying with an Ojibway elder who asked her to pray for every aspect of Creation. "You'll need to get up very early," the elder instructed Judith, "so that you are finished by nightfall." Judith began on the east coast of North America, and her prayers swept around the globe, touching every continent and every ocean. She prayed for the sun, the moon, the planets, the stars. She included everything in her prayers. Inspired by Judith's example, I sweep through the landscape of my own life, from my earliest days to this moment, offering prayers for all of the people and places, all of the friends and foes who have shaped the riverbed of my life.
