Roger Arthur Peterson died today, February 3, 1959. He was a pilot … just twenty-one when he died … flying.
He thought … heck, everyone who knew him thought … he had the whole flight plan of his life laid out. All he ever wanted to do was to fly.
By age 21, when a lot of us are starting to yawn and stretch and wake up to some of life’s possibilities, Roger had already had been flying for most of five years. In April of 1958, Roger qualified for his commercial pilots’ license and was hired by Dwyer Flying Service in Mason City, Iowa … his life and his dreams already arcing skyward.
Roger and Deanne Lenz had known each other since junior high. They went on to be steadies in high school, and on September 14, 1958 they were married at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alta, Iowa.
They found a little place in Clear Lake … both had jobs. Deanne worked at KGLO-TV. And they began taxiing d...
