Piece Description

Andy Hollinden (Professor of Rock History at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music) does a weekly feature for In Search of a Song called "Rock History 101" where he discusses the songs and lives of great rock artists of music history. In this program, (created and broadcast in celebration of Jimi Hendrix's birthday - November 27th, 1942), Andy talks with host Jason Wilber about Jim's amazing life, guitar inovations, technical prowess, songwriting, and untimely passing at the age of 27. This piece is "EVERGREEN", i.e. the show can be run anytime as the content is not date specific.

Topics discussed include: Jimi's early days on the "Chitlin' circuit". Meeting his first manager Chas Chandler. Going to England to make his first album. Performing at Monterey Pop Festival and becoming known in the US. The Jimi Hendrix "Experience". Jimi's uncanny ability to think and play guitar forward and backward in his recordings. His mother, and the writing of "Little Wing". His philosophy of "being in the moment" and his song "If 6 was 9". The sound of Jimi's dreams (the sound of being underwater) and his discovery that stereo phasing technology captured that sound. The use of color imagry in his lyrics. Blues roots. His last performances with Band of Gypsies.

Musical selections include: Stone Free, Are You Experienced?, Burning of the Midnight Lamp, Little Wing,If 6 was 9, Bold As Love, Voodoo Chile, Machine Gun.
