Halloween, The Feel Good Story

From: Jason Sear
Length: 12:27

A group of people in my small Midwestern hometown build a not-for-profit haunted house every year. It's good old fashioned family fun, with a deeper purpose. Read the full description.

Haunted_house_small The group is called Henry Street Horrors and every year they plan, construct and then deconstruct an elaborate haunted house at our local 4-H park.  It started as a graveyard in someone's backyard, but has expanded to fill a cattle barn.  They spend 3 months working on the project.  50% of the proceeds they collect are donated to the 4-H park and the remaining 50% is saved and used the following year on haunted house props.  Nobody makes any money working on this project.

The man who started Henry Street Horrors (...and yes, lived on Henry Street) was Mick Huxtable.  Sadly, he was accidentally electrocuted during a flood in 2008 and died.  Mick was dedicated to providing the local community with safe and scary Halloween fun.  His brother Doug is now one of the lead members of the group and works to continue his brother's legacy.  I sat down with him to discuss the serious and not-so-serious side of building the haunted house.
