Monday’s On The Money Minute. Is it true that Wall Street Never Sleeps? Well, if you’re a movie fan you know about the sequel to the 1987 blockbuster Wall Street, starring the infamous corporate raider Gordon Gekko. And my-oh-my, have things changed in 20 years.
Tuesday’s On The Money Minute. In the movie, Olive Stone’s sequel does a good job of portraying the excesses of the last 10 years, driven by a runaway bull market in the early 2000s, to the incredible bubble in real estate prices. A wise Gordon Gekko’s response? “You wanna know what the mother of all bubble was?,” Gekko ask. “Us. The human race.”
Wednesday’s On The Money Minute. “It’s not about money – It’s about the game.” That’s a quote from the venerable Gordon Gekko in the new movie. The movie did a good job of portraying the Federal Reserve Bank as a lender of last resort. Subprime mortgages, enhanced leveraged funds, asset backed commercial paper money markets, term securities lending, and tons of other forms of financial instruments.
Thursday’s On The Money Minute. I love a line I heard in the movie. It went like this. “What the most dangerous question on Wall Street?” The answer? “How are you?” And if you asked that question in 2008 or 2009 to an investment banker on the Street, no one wanted to answer because of the market meltdown.
Friday’s On The Money Minute. Michael Douglas is the king of one-line quotes, his character Gordon Gekko says, “The mother of all evil is speculation.” Boy, isn’t that the truth.
