Part One: LIE DETECTOR It's quite possible that when your Mom or brother or 3rd grade teacher told you things you now know weren't true, you can at least rest easy knowing that the poor unwitting source was just passing on what they were taught. History is passed from generation to generation and the truth can morph into less accurate folklore. We get things wrong, as when the Chicago Tribune's headline on the morning of November 3rd, 1948 claimed "Dewey Defeats Truman", when the opposite was true. Or even when we get the facts right, we may dumb-down fascinating realities, potentially as entertaining as any soap opera or reality TV show. Today we talk with Dr. James W. Loewen, author of the best-seller, Lies My Teacher Told Me, on his latest book Teaching What Really Happened: How to Avoid the Tyranny of Textbooks and Get Students Excited About Doing History.
Part Two: LIE DETECTOR The truth may not always be pretty but it is DNA-like in its undeniability. Stories are woven, tales made of whole cloth. The truth is history and history should rely on the truth. We return to our discussion with Sociologist and author, Dr. James W. Loewen, on his latest book, Teaching What Really Happened: How to Avoid the Tyranny of Textbooks and Get Students Excited About Doing History.
