As national health reform rolls out over the next few years, it should make contraception easier to get and less expensive. But no one knows yet what exactly that will look like. Laura Stepp visited Massachusetts, which has been used as a model for national reform, to hear from young women, a top researcher, and a practicing physician on how changes in the Bay State have affected young women.

LAURA: Welcome to Sex Really. I’m Laura Sessions Stepp. Being able to afford birth control is a challenge these days. In many Western countries, national health insurance covers pills, IUDs and other forms of contraception. But in this country, private insurance plans are the norm.

What a woman has to pay out of pocket – or does not have to pay – can confuse even the smartest client.

Plans may become easier to navigate – and out-of-pocket costs for birth control may decline or disappear - as national health reform rolls out over the next few years. But no one knows yet what exactly that will look like. So we decided to visit Massachusetts, which has been used as a model for national reform, to hear how young women there were experiencing the change.
