Excluding WikiLeaks from Shield Law Stinks
Legislation for a federal shield law, which would protect reporters and their sources against being forced to disclose confidential information, has picked up steam recently – but with a twist. Sens. Charles Schumer of New York and Dianne Feinstein of California are working with representatives of the newspaper industry to craft new language for an amendment to the bill that will explicitly exclude organizations like WikiLeaks. This new push comes on the heels of WikiLeaks’ decision to post nearly 77,000 classified Afghanistan war records obtained through anonymous sources.
