German Roots in America

Almost 50 million americans have german ancestry. Radijojo, the first International Children's Radio network and the schoolchildren from class 8C of the Liebfrauen Catholic School present: German Roots in America. A show to help us better understand German-American relationships. Young people tell us of their everyday life at school in Germany, about travelling in the USA and the search for prominant germans in America. They interview passers-by in Germany about General Steuben and make new friends through an internet conference with an american school, the St. George School in Hermann, Missouri; they sing together, bridging a distance of thousands of miles. They also meet with an american journalist, Nick Kumanoff, who relates many fascinating stories from american history, a history that has been moulded by a not inconsiderable amount of german immigrants. He points out why people leave their original land, how the contract between the german settlers and the Comanche indians came about and why it remains to this day unbroken, and why the descendants of the german immigrants can hardly speak a word of german these days. This report also shows how natural and deeply-rooted the friendship between german and american really is.
