For many, wild means chaotic, unruly, destructive. Hiking in the Mount Sneffels Wilderness in Colorado, I realize "wild" for me means essential, alive, focused. What would I be like if I gave myself fully to wildness, allowing this vitality to well up within me? I'd be alert, like the chipmunk darting among the rocks; relaxed like the aspens rooting into the rain-drenched soil; and awake like the wild eyes that greet me at every turn. In wilderness, I surrender comfort, but what I gain is immeasurable: buoyancy, vitality, harmony, joy.
