The U.S. Postal Service’s recent proposal to hike postal rates has small print publications and news outlets worried for their future.
The USPS is asking the Postal Regulatory Commission to approve emergency rate increases in order to help offset a $7 billion deficit. But the rate increases may put dozens of independent and alternative print publications in jeopardy.
Teresa Stack, publisher of The Nation, said that this is the third price hike to hit periodicals since 2007. She estimates that the magazine would face an additional $200,000 in postage fees – not an easy amount to make up. Stack worries that some publications may have to close up shop.
