The Berlin Airlift and Candy Bombers

From: Radijojo World Children's Radio Network
Length: 00:25:00

Berlin the capital of Germany, was in a difficult situation after world war 2: The city was split into sectors by the allied forces. Military jets were then needed for supplying the population with food and amenities. We'll take you on an exciting transatlantic time travel. You probably know from the history books about The Berlin-Air-Blockade 1948/9? Do you know that it happened after the second world war?, as west Berlin was sealed off by the Soviets and American and British aid-aircrafts had to fly over Berlin and drop all the necessary humanitarian supplies to the people. Without these essential supplies the people of Berlin would have perished. On his missions the American pilot Gail Halvorsen also made sure that the children were happy, by dropping candy and sweets for them . Wow! Now he has reached the ripe old age of 90 and took his time to be interviewed by the kid's the Grundschule in taunusviertel, in lichtenrade Berlin. So let's not get stuck in a boring history book, let's connect direct into the classroom via web cam. Wow that was thrilling for everyone. And also, he wore the same uniform for us that he wore in 1948 during those missions, in his affectionately named aircraft: candy Bomber. So you can tune in and listen to Gail reminiscing about his experience 60 years ago. Read the full description.
